Roy Joseph Stevens

R.J. was born to M. Roy and Hallie Stevens in Rosenberg, Texas, August 5, 1927. He and his wife, Pauline, have two sons, Roy Joseph and Timothy Paul and one daughter, Paula Sue Ladd. He and Pauline have seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

From 1945 to 1951, R.J. studied music at Abilene Christian College, the University of Houston and Oklahoma A & M College.

He served as a local evangelist for 36 years with churches of Christ in Texas, Oklahoma and California. In 1983 he moved to Kemp, Texas to do full-time gospel meeting and singing school work which he continues doing for churches throughout the United States.

In 1987, he compiled and co-edited “Hymns for Worship” hymnal. He has published and uses the “Sight Singing and Song Directing” workbook in his singing school workshops. R. J. has written and arranged hundreds of songs and hymns, which is still a very important part of his life. R. J. has been a member of the Favorite Hymns Quartet for 30 years. He is also the director of the Oklahoma Singing School in Wilburton, Oklahoma, which is conducted each year in July. Over the past 22 years since the school began, R.J. has instructed hundreds of men and young men to become effective song worship leaders.

Tim P. Stevens

Tim was born to R.J. and Pauline Stevens on December 17, 1951 in Houston, Texas. He married Vicki Lee Mullins in 1976. The Stevens have three daughters: Rebecca Lee Helvey, Kayleen Dawn Dennis, and Penny Joanne Stevens. Tim and Vicki have one grandson, Ryder Lee Dennis and three granddaughters, Clara Lee Helvey, Tessa Dawn Dennis and Kate Rose Helvey.

In addition to the training he received from his father, Tim studied music at Florida College (Temple Terrace, FL) and San Bernardino Valley College (San Bernardino, CA). After completing his work at Florida College in 1972, Tim completed a three-year apprenticeship with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Co. in San Bernardino, California, and continued working for the railroad until 1989.

From 1990 to 1997, Tim was the evangelist for the Rio Grande Valley church of Christ in Belen, New Mexico. He has been preaching in Kemp, Texas since 1997, where he also serves as an elder, along with his father.

In addition to local preaching and conducting gospel meetings, Tim conducts singing schools in congregations around the country. For the past 17 years he has served as co-director, along with his father, R.J., at the annual Oklahoma Singing School. He and his father also co-authored “Rudiments of Sight Singing and Song Directing” workbook. Tim has been a member of the Favorite Hymns Quartet for 30 years and has produced 15 recordings with the quartet.
